Locomotive Mallet à vapeur – C’est le parcours intégral des gorges du Doux jusqu’à Lamastre !
With the train of Ardèche you discover fantastic nature besides visiting historical events. The narrow-gauge line was constructed at the hillside by more than 1000 workers between 1886 and 1891. Many vehicles were constructed for this network, locomotives, railcars and cars which are classified as historic monuments.
The departure from « Tournon-sur-Rhone » the Train of Ardèche sinks into the « Gorges du Doux ». Leaning on the work of engineering, it leads past the precipices, gets over the « Doux par des viaducs » or crosses the hill of « Mordane » by passing through a tunnel of 265 meters.
Symbolic of the network, the steam engine from the type « Mallet » was constructed to get through the tight curves of the gorge. Two of them were restored in 2013 : n°403, constructed in 1903, classified as a historic monument and n°414 built in 1932.
